The Audi Cup is here, and Napoli have a big match in store to open up the two-day tournament, facing major Spanish contenders Atlético Madrid in a huge pre-season preparation match for both clubs, and possibly with major implications for the early parts of Napoli’s season.
While Atlético’s summer has been focused on the controversy of being under a transfer ban, they’re still a dangerous and immensely talented team. From Jan Oblak in goal to Jose Gimenez in defense, from Koke and Saul Ñíguez in midfield to Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres in attack, this team is stacked from top to bottom with top-shelf talent that can stand with the best teams in Europe, and will provide a stiff test for Napoli to face in this mini-tournament format.
Of course, Napoli are no slouch themselves, and they’ve been firing on all cylinders in their early pre-season friendlies. Those matches weren’t against opponents on Atlético’s level, however, and they’ll have to step things up a notch against them, and against whichever of Liverpool or Audi Cup hosts Bayern Munich that Napoli will face on Wednesday.
How Napoli perform in this match — and on Wednesday — will also be a good sign as to how prepared Napoli are for their two-legged Champions League playoff tie to earn themselves a spot in the Champions League group stage. A strong showing here will be a good sign of things to come, and hopefully we don’t come out of this match with any major concerns.
