Napoli are in a bit of a desperate place right now in Serie A, but were given a huge opportunity to dig their way out of that a bit on Sunday — just as long as they can go into the San Siro and beat Inter Milan. No pressure.
Here’s the situation: Napoli are four points behind Roma thanks to their colossal screwup last weekend against Sassuolo. With so little time left in the season, they need to close the gap now in order to make sure they finish in second place like they very badly need to. Fortunately, Roma gave Napoli an opportunity on Sunday morning: they lost 3-1 to Lazio, giving Napoli an opening to close the gap to one point. If they win, of course.
Somewhat luckily, Napoli are catching Inter in a terrible swoon of form, going winless in their last five matches, a spell including three backbreaking losses to Sampdoria, Crotone, and Fiorentina, and a draw in the Derby della Madonnina. However, we all know that it’s been almost six years since Napoli last beat Inter Milan at the San Siro, and sometimes history can be difficult to overcome.
Fortunately Napoli are at full strength health wise and despite last weekend’s setback, don’t have any major form concerns. Inter are the kind of team that Napoli typically step up their performances against as well, so hopefully we’ll see something good here.
Hopefully.
