Marek Hamsik's status for Thursday's Europa League match in Turkey was in question from the moment he had to be subbed off with a thigh injury on Saturday. Now today after Napoli's morning training session, the captain's availability doesn't look any better.
Hamsik and fellow midfielder Jorginho both were limited to fitness work in the weight room while the rest of the squad was in training - though Giandomenico Mesto is still only doing individual work on the side - and both appear to be very doubtful to take part in Napoli's efforts to get a positive result away against Trabzonspor. What exactly is wrong with Jorginho is unclear, though he wasn't moving exceptionally well for much of the second half against Palermo on Saturday.
Losing both would be a blow, especially with David Lopez looking exhausted and off the pace during his hour on the pitch on Saturday. If none of those three can start on Thursday, we're looking at a midfield pivot of Walter Gargano and Gokhan Inler, with Jonathan De Guzman - who also looked a little tired this weekend - in Hamsik's central playmaking role. Admittedly, Napoli only "need" a scoring draw on Thursday, but a win would be nice and that midfield seems like a risky way of going about getting either result.
Hopefully this thigh injury isn't serious and doesn't linger. Hamsik's been in fine form recently, and losing him for a spell is the last thing Napoli needs right now.
