With a poor season and talk of a broken-down relationship with Gokhan Inler, it was only a matter of time before Valon Behrami was linked to a move away from Napoli, and that time has come.
After rumors earlier in the day from Corriere dello Sport among others indicating interests from Liverpool and Tottenham in the English Premier League, now there are several detailed reports emerging indicating that Behrami may be close to a deal with Inter Milan, a deal which apparently waits only on approval from Aurelio De Laurentiis to move forward.
According to those reports, Napoli will receive €6 million in the deal, recouping most of the €8 million spent to buy him from Fiorentina two years ago. Considering how poor he was last season, getting that much for Behrami should be considered an accomplishment.
Behrami would most likely be used to help replace Esteban Cambiasso, whose contract with Inter has run out and is not being renewed. Inter have also been linked with a move for Liverpool's Lucas Leiva for the same task, but Behrami makes more sense for them for a variety of reasons.
If Behrami moves, Napoli will almost certainly bring in another defensive-minded midfielder, especially with Blerim Dzemaili also linked away. Rumors have been churning again of a potential move for Javier Mascherano, which is still a move that makes sense on various levels but will have to be completed before it's believed.
The holes sure to be formed in the roster over the coming weeks will be difficult to fill, but Riccardo Bigon and his staff have earned a lot of faith with their transfer moves over the past few years. Napoli are in good hands, and seem to have a very exciting transfer window lined up. It's going to be a fun ride.
