A bad start lead to a great finish for Napoli, and one performance stood high above the rest.

Just 15 minutes in to yesterday's match, all looked lost. Napoli had given up a first-minute goal, Kalidou Koulibaly was hurt, and the squad looked swamped as Dynamo Moscow surged forward again and again. Then the flow of the match changed to a certain striker putting the team on his shoulders and bulldozing everything in sight, and Napoli won handily. But how did the rest of the squad fare? Well, that's what we're here to show you.

Starters

Mariano Andujar - 5 - Made a right hash of things on Dynamo's goal, but he was far from the only one to screw that up. Otherwise, made a couple decent saves and was less bad then usual on distribution and high balls, though he still wasn't particularly good at either.

Henrique - 6 - Committed some really stupid fouls, but was actually quite helpful on helping defend set pieces most of the time. Wasn't much of a factor going forward, but that's just business as usual and not surprising.

Kalidou Koulibaly - n/a - Was one of several guilty parties on Dynamo's goal, then got hurt a few minutes later. Hopefully he's not out for long.

Miguel Britos - 5 - Perhaps the most at-fault for Dynamo's goal, as he bit hard on a bit of movement from Kokorin designed to open space for Kuranyi, who it looked like he was supposed to be marking on the play. Decent but unspectacular otherwise.

Faouzi Ghoulam - 8 - Only consistently good defender on the back line, tying Valbuena in knots all day and getting forward with ease and effectiveness. His cross to set up Higuain's first goal was lovely, and he was a menace going forward all day long. Also drew the foul that got Zobnin his second yellow card, for what that's worth.

Gokhan Inler - 6 - Did a solid job supporting both attack and defense. Wasn't especially flashy, but he got the job done, and that's a sight better than most of his performances this year, though a couple of his fouls were in bad spots.

Jorginho - 7 - HI JORGINHO. God that was nice to see him play well. Was the hub of possession and distributed the ball with his usual efficiency and effectiveness. Defended well, cutting out a fair bit of danger with his positioning and ability to read what's coming. Play him more, Rafa.

Jose Callejon - 4 - Yikes. Callejon wasn't just not on the same page as the rest of the squad, he wasn't even in the same damn library. This is a long run of mostly bad form for him now, and if you're not concerned, you might not even be watching.

Jonathan De Guzman - 4 - The best thing he did all day was put a ball in to the box at an awkward height that Higuain made work because Higuain is really good at making things work. In fact, that was really the only good thing he did all day. Moving on.

Dries Mertens - 8 - Despite his usual norm of slumping in a third straight start, Mertens was energetic and effective all day, keeping the dangerous Kozlov pinned back and regularly creating havoc in the final third. More of this please, Dries.

Gonzalo Higuain - 10 - Scored a hat trick, including a really impressive and difficult shot to finish it off. Napoli probably don't win this match without him.

Substitutes

Raul Albiol - 6 - Did a decent job anchoring the line after Koulibaly went down hurt. Needs to cut out those runs forward quite so often, because they almost never end well and he doesn't have the wheels to get back against the inevitable counter through where he's supposed to be.

Marek Hamsik - 6 - Kept things ticking over and created chances with his usual aplomb, even in limited minutes with the match winding down.

Camilo Zuniga - n/a - Late defensive substitution so didn't get a chance to do much, but it was good just to see him on the pitch again for the first time since October.

Napoli got off to a terrible start against Dynamo Moscow, but a hat trick from Gonzalo Higuain was more than enough to turn the tide.

After a disastrous start, Napoli were able to dig deep and found a way to come back and thrash their Russian guests, beating Dynamo Moscow 3-1 to take fairly good control of their Europa League round of 16 tie. They won on the back of a Gonzalo Higuain hat trick, and hopefully will be able to use this match to overturn some poor recent momentum.

The match couldn't have started off much worse, giving up one clear early shot to Yuri Zhirkov on one of the first touches of the match before giving up a far-too-easy goal to Kevin Kuranyi moments later. That start seemed to knock Napoli badly off balance, with Dynamo running all over them and the partnenopei attack unable to do anything cohesive when they had the ball.

Things went from bad to worse when Kalidou Koulibaly went down holding his ankle in the 8th minute, with the physios calling for Raul Albiol to come on as a substitute almost immediately after getting to the Frenchman's side. It didn't look good for Koulibaly as the physios were working on him after helping him to the side of the pitch, but hopefully he won't be out for long. He's far too important to Napoli.

Fortunately, Dynamo weren't able to take further advantage of Napoli's early shakiness, and the boys in denim were able to slowly work their way back in to the match. They started looking as though confidence was finally growing around the 20th minute, and it wasn't long before the breakthrough was there for the taking.

To no one's surprise, it was Faouzi Ghoulam racing up the left flank on a counter that was the pivotal moment, pinging in a near-perfect cross that Gonzalo Higuain flicked on past Vladimir Gabulov in goal to level the scoreline. You could feel the momentum slowly, grindingly shifting Napoli's way before that moment, but when the ball snapped in to the net you could almost hear the pop as the match flipped on its head.

Just minutes later, Dries Mertens was hacked down in the box by Mathieu Valbuena, and it was a penalty for Napoli. Higuain calmly slotted the ball dead center after making the keeper think he was going to his right, and Napoli were off to the races. Things played out a bit more evenly through the rest of the half, but the second half immediately began with disaster for Dynamo.

The ball was pinging around Napoli's left flank a bit, with neither side able to keep the ball for more than a couple of touches or get the ball out of about a 15-yard box of an area. This clearly upset Roman Zobnin, who went in hard and late on a tackle against Ghoulam as the left back was getting the ball away to Inler. The referee was not amused with the Russian midfielder, and showed him his second yellow card of the match, putting the visitors down to ten men and basically sealing the match with half of it yet to be played.

Of course, leaving things as they were just wasn't enough for Higuain, who wanted that hat trick, and boy did he earn it. Less than ten minutes after getting the man advantage, Higuain found himself with space in the box and a weird ball coming in from Jonathan De Guzman. It was too high to volley, even with a scissor-kick, but too low to head. Most strikers would have gotten locked up by the ball, but Higuain just tapped it off his chest and leaned over to hammer it home.

This Pipita guy might just be good. Maybe. Just throwing out the possibility.

Napoli couldn't find another goal in the match, but still go in to the second leg in good position. Things aren't completely rosy with just a two goal lead and Dynamo holding an away goal heading in to the Russian leg of the match next week, but it's still not a bad place to be in at all. It's certainly a far cry better than things looked like they would end up in the first few minutes of the match. Still, things are far from tied up heading in to the second leg, but this is not a bad place to be in at all. Now, on to Verona.

Already up a man and a goal, Napoli put away the match when Gonzalo Higuain completed his hat trick.

Dynamo Moscow went down to ten men early in the second half, but kept pushing to try to get another goal. That gave Gonzalo Higuain the space he needed to do this:

Napoli were down early, but a lovely bit of play saw Napoli level in the 25th minute.

Napoli were down early thanks to a disastrous first-minute goal, but it didn't take too long before they turned the tables on Dynamo Moscow and leveled with their Russian visitors thanks to this goal:

It's a shame that you don't properly see the cross from Faouzi Ghoulam, because as good as that flicked header from Gonzalo Higuain was, the cross was absolutely phenomenal. Napoli went up 2-1 shortly after when Dries Mertens was hauled down for a penalty, converted calmly by, you guessed it, Higuain. The quick turnaround from a terible start is exactly what Napoli needed today.

It's almost match time, the lineups are out, and boy is Napoli's weird.

There's no Marek Hamsik, no Raul Albiol, and no David Lopez. For a match that needs both defensive solidarity and serious goalscoring threat, this lineup seriously lacks either. Jonathan De Guzman as the central attacking mid just doesn't work, but Rafa keeps trotting it out to watch it keep not working. Stellar.

For those in need of translation, that tweet says that Manolo Gabbiadini will be out tonight with a muscular injury likely picked up in training. Hopefully he's not going to be out too long because yikes this is bad news.

That means we'll likely see Jose Callejon and Jonathan De Guzman start today with Dries Mertens held in reserve as an impact sub. It'd be nice to see Mertens from the start, but he's already started two straight matches and three of the last four, and we've seen before that he just doesn't function well when overused.

Napoli haven't yet indicated long Gabbiadini will be out. Hopefully this is just a minor issue that won't keep him out for long, because he's been the club's best forward since he arrived. Please don't be super-broken, Gabbi.

Napoli have a tough task ahead of them if they want to make the Europa League quarter finals, and a strong start to the tie in the home leg is a must.

It's time again for Napoli to turn their eye to Europe as Russian side Dynamo Moscow come to Naples to start the Europa League round of sixteen, the second knockout round of the competition. While many are writing Dynamo off as an easy opponent, they're anything but, and it's going to take one heck of a performance to get past them.

Proving Their Value

Despite being 11 time winners of Russia's top division, Dynamo Moscow don't get a ton of respect. The club - once tied to a sporting group affiliated with the Soviet Ministry of Internal Affairs, better known as the KGB - has been something of an also-ran in Russia for decades, winning no trophies since the mid-90's and have struggled for relevancy in recent years.

Now though, under Stanislav Cherchesov, Dynamo is becoming steadily more powerful in Russia. Now with a side built around a core of talented and mostly young Russians and supplemented by experienced and quality foreign veterans, they've done very well so far in this season's Europa League campaign, going undefeated so far, a run that includes two wins over a tough opponent in PSV.

They're not going to be easy to break down, though Napoli do represent a significant challenge for Dynamo as they've oft struggled against teams and talents like theirs over the last couple of years. The specific risk for Napoli, though, is that Zenit are very good at both earning and converting set pieces, a weakness of Napoli's that has hurt them too often this season.

The Need To Start Strong

The story for Napoli is simple: start strong, start fast, and don't let up. Napoli need to get as many goals as they can in this leg while trying desperately not to give up away goals, because the second leg in Moscow is going to be a rotten jerk of a time to get a positive result.

That means a full-strength lineup - thank goodness Napoli can rotate against Hellas Verona this weekend - and a performance with more focus and drive than we've seen from Napoli in an uncomfortable amount of time. Fortunately the only assured absences are the players we already know and expect - Lorenzo Insigne still isn't fit to return, Christian Maggio and Walter Gargano are still dinged up, and neither Ivan Strinic nor Michu are registered for their own reasons.

Just please, please, please don't screw this up Napoli. We need this to go well.

Napoli will come out and attack early in the Europa League, thanks in part to a strong matchday squad.

Manager Rafa Benitez has named his Napoli squad to face Dynamo Moscow in the Europa League, and promises a strong attack to go with it.

"We must attack our opponent, as we did with Inter," Benitez said in his pre-match press conference. "If we play like we can tomorrow we can get a few goals. We have to score goals, and try find a balance."

That balance will be key, as Dynamo have a potent attack that can easily carve apart Napoli's defense if they're not careful. If they lose focus, it might not matter if Napoli scores a few goals, because if Dynamo can get two or three away goals, that might end the tie then and there.

Lorenzo Insigne is still working his way back to full fitness, so isn't in the squad yet. Walter Gargano is still out with his own injury, and the cap-tied Ivan Strinic is of course left out. The full
