Plus international call-ups and Icardi rumors

Insigne responds criticism

In an interview with Sky Sport Italia after Napoli’s 1-1 draw with Sassuolo, Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne responded to critics saying “I always get criticized. I don’t want to stir up controversy, but I am the only one who always gets targeted when I don’t score or don’t perform up to my usual standards.”

After a red-hot start to the season, Insigne has struggled to regain his scoring form and has only scored 3 goals in a span of 4 months and 20 matches. His critics voices have only gotten louder since the native Neapolitan has taken over the captain’s armband from Marek Hamsik. Insigne’s recent comments have fed to the rumors that the Italian may be open to a move elsewhere. Gazzetto dello Sport claim that Manchester United are among the interested clubs (along with Liverpool and Manchester City), however Insigne is under contract until 2022 and Aurelio De Laurentiis has emphatically denied that the Partenopei’s star man is for sale. It would take a lot for Insigne to be lured away from his boyhood club, but the fact that the controversial Mino Raola is his agent only complicates things.

International call-ups

Several Napoli players have received call-ups for the upcoming international break while many others are still waiting for the official squads to be announced:

Ospina: Colombia

Allan: Brazil

Koulibaly: Senegal

Zielinski: Poland

Milik: Poland

Napoli interested in Icardi?

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Napoli are among the favorites to land Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi along with Spanish giants Real Madrid. After a disappointing season and a horrid week, Real Madrid will most likely be looking to completely revamp their squad over the summer, although it remains to be seen whether Icardi will be in their plans. A big part of what happens this summer will most likely depend on their plans for Karim Benzema, who Zinedine Zidane has praised in the past. However, they may still be eyeing a replacement as the French striker turned 31 earlier this season, while Icardi is only 26. The fact that Wanda Nara is Icardi’s agent make things interesting seeing how she has said in the past that the two want to stay in Italy. If this is the case, Napoli may be a prime destination for the Argentine.

Sassuolo 1, Napoli 1

Carlo Ancelotti made eight changes to the starting 11 from Thursday's 3-0 Europa League win against RB Salzburg and it showed. Napoli looked disjointed throughout the match and were fortunate to escape with a point in Sassuolo thanks to a late Lorenzo Insigne goal. The changes made to the lineup clearly show that Ancelotti is prioritizing the Europa League, but it was a disappointing performance especially given how much the depth of this Napoli side has been praised. The highlight of the game for Napoli has to be the fans, who showed up in great numbers to the Mapei Stadium to support the Partenopei.

Napoli struggled throughout the first half and while players like Adam Ounas looked lively at times, poor decision making in the final third led to a lack of many real opportunities. Dries Mertens had the best chance of the first half, but was unable to capitalize on a great through ball thanks to a goal saving tackle by Sassuolo defender Merih Demiral. Sassulo broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute when Allan’s sliding tackle was unable to knock the ball out of play and Domenico Berardi pounced on the chance to give the home side the 1-0 lead. David Ospina, in for the suspended Alex Meret, could do nothing about the goal as Berardi’s shot was deflected right in front of him by Sebastiano Luperto. Frustration continued for the away side as Napoli continuously gave away possession cheaply and were unable to get into any real rhythm. Despite this, Insigne found the equalizer in the 86th minute as a failed attempt of a clearance by Francesco Magnanelli fell perfectly to the Napoli captain, who slotted it into the back of the net.

The loss means that Napoli are now 18 points behind leaders Juventus and only six points ahead of third place Inter Milan. While the Partenopei are almost a lock for a Champions League place at the end of the season, their recent league form is still worrying as they only have one win in their last five matches. All Napoli’s attention will now be on their midweek Europa League clash with RB Salzburg. While the team has a 3-0 lead from the first leg, they will be without the centerbacks Kalidou Koulibaly, Nikola Maksimovic, and Raul Albiol due to suspensions and injury. Furthermore, centerback Vlad Chiriches came off at halftime with an apparent knock although the extent of the injury is still unknown.

Plus Hamsik reveals his favorite manager

Lazaro to Napoli?

According to Sport Mediaset, Napoli are in advanced talks with 22 year-old Hertha Berlin winger, Valentino Lazaro. Reports claim that Napoli are willing to bid roughly 20 million euros on the Austrian who is seen by many as the possible heir to Jose Callejon (who turned 32 earlier this year). Lazaro spent the first 5 years of his career at Red Bull Salzburg before moving to Hertha Berlin in 2017 where he didn’t take long to establish himself as a regular in the starting eleven. In 23 games so far this season in the Bundesliga he has 2 goals and 5 assists.

Hamsik talks Napoli managers

In an interview with Il Mattino, Marek Hamsik praised many of his former managers at Napoli but admitted that under Sarri, Napoli played the best football in Europe and that the three years under Sarri were “extraordinary.” Hamsik also went on to praise Edoardo Reja and Walter Mazzarri but curiously left out Rafa Benitez saying “He used to replace me too many times, but our relationship was good.” Sarri also made a routine of taking Hamsik off for Piotr Zielinski but at the later stage in his career it appears as if the former Napoli captain understood his physical limitations.

Balotelli opens the door for future Napoli move

Mario Balotelli has gotten off to a flying start at Marseille scoring 4 goals in 6 matches and averaging a goal roughly every 100 minutes. In an interview with La Pravence, Balotelli claimed that “As far as I am concerned, Marseille are the biggest club in France. I thank Nice and its supporters, but there’s no comparison with Marseille... I’ve always felt that I would fit in here and I can’t explain why. The atmosphere is a bit like Naples. I’ve said the only Italian club I could play for would be Napoli. It’s more or less the same thing at Marseille.” So while it seems the enigmatic Italian striker is enjoying life in Marseille for now, would you be open to seeing him at Napoli later in his career?

Napoli 3, RB Salzburg 0

Napoli capitalized on early chances to take a 3-0 win in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 tie with RB Salzburg. Napoli got on the scoresheet in under 10 minutes when Arkadiusz Milik calmly faked and ran past the Salzburg keeper after receiving a clinical cutting pass from Dries Mertens. Although Milik has had a great season in Serie A, this marked his first European goal of the campaign. Fellow Polish international Piotr Zielinski also deserves some plaudits for the goal after beautifully scooping the ball past an opposing defender to find Mertens. Fabian Ruiz doubled the lead in the 17th minute with a powerful left-footed volley from the top of the box past the diving keeper.

The second half got off to a nervy start but Napoli were bailed out numerous times by Alex Meret. An RB Salzburg own goal in the 57th minute proved to be decisive as Napoli take a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the second leg in Austria.

However, despite the scoreline, this wasn’t an easy win by a long shot and if it wasn’t for some impressive goalkeeping by Meret, Napoli could be looking at a 3-2 scoreline heading into the second leg in Austria. Ancelotti echoed this sentiment in an interview after the match when he said “We allowed some dangerous counter-attacks and through runs that at 3-0 we really could’ve avoided. We can be impenetrable when we defend well, but we get too exuberant and try to push forward... I was more concerned by the lack of balance in the final stages”

Napoli’s captain looks to regain his early season form

After a red-hot start to the season, Lorenzo Insigne has struggled to regain his scoring form. Since converting a penalty in Napoli’s 1-1 draw with PSG back in early November, Insigne has only scored twice in a span of 4 months and 18 games. His scoring woes continued on Sunday against Juventus when his penalty kick struck the post leaving Napoli without a point to show for their performance. Since Marek Hamsik’s move to China in February, Insigne has taken over the captaincy and it’s possible that the added pressure of wearing the armband has only elevated his struggles in front of net.

As the season has gone on, it has become clear that Carlo Ancelotti’s preferred eleven features Insigne lined up as a secondary striker below Arkadiusz Milik. This is a much more free role than he had previously under Maurizzio Sarri, who preferred to play him out wide. Insigne still likes to drift to the outside but having him in a more central role has allowed him to be more of a play-maker rather than someone who relies on pace as many wingers do. While Insigne’s lack of goal scoring is certainly a concern, it would be far too easy and not completely accurate to claim he’s been playing poorly. He’s still generating an impressive number of chances for both himself and others as was seen on Sunday against Juventus. In the second half of Sunday’s match, Insigne did his signature cut inside on his right foot, but instead of aiming for the far corner of the goal, he picked out the run of Jose Callejon on the edge of the six-yard box to get Napoli on the score-sheet.

Regarding his struggles in front of net, Insigne stated “Ancelotti changed my position and I feel good, although lately I haven’t been as sharp as I was at the start of the season... The important thing is to always work hard, goals aside. The performance is important.”

Ancelotti will most likely stick with his 4-4-2 formation, but it will be interesting to see if he chooses to shake things up to get the Napoli captain going. This could mean going with the two small forwards up top in Insigne and Dries Mertens or moving Insigne back to a wider position out on the left.

Napoli 1, Juventus 2

Two red cards and a missed penalty was just some of the drama in a chaotic, action-packed match at the San Paolo between Napoli and Juventus on Sunday night. Despite going down to ten men early in the match, Napoli were the better team throughout most of the night and were unlucky to not get at least a point. The Partenopei showed great determination and character through adversity and should have their heads held up high despite the result. The loss does means the gap at the top widens to 16 points sealing shut any slight chance Napoli still had at the Scudetto, but realistically this match was always more about pride than anything else.

It was a nervy start for the home side, but as the half went on Napoli began to grow into the match. However, everything changed in the 25th minute when a poor back pass from Kevin Malcuit forced Alex Meret to “take down” a charging Cristiano Ronaldo just outside the box. Because the referee called the foul, and it was a clear goal scoring chance, the referee had no choice but to award Meret with a red card once the foul had been called.

Did the referee make the right call?

Replays showed that Meret didn’t make any contact with Ronaldo and while Juventus fans will claim that Meret clearly impeded him forcing Ronaldo to jump over the challenge, if there wasn’t any contact does it matter? After all, the challenge surely wasn’t a dangerous one. Nevertheless the red card and free kick were awarded and Miralem Pjanic inevitably found the back of the net over the wall and past a diving David Ospina.

Napoli’s response was quick and a beautiful ball from Fabian Ruiz found the run of Piotr Zielinski who managed to beat Wojciech Szczesny but not the post. After going down to ten men Napoli looked the better team, but in the 39th minute Juventus took advantage of poor marking on a corner as Emre Can’s header doubled the lead for the visitors.

Just slightly over a minute-and-a-half into the second half, the drama continued as Miralem Pjanic picked up his second yellow card to see both sides now down to 10 men. If the Napoli supporters didn’t believe a comeback was possible after the Pjanic red, they certainly did in the 61st minute when Jose Callejon got on the end of a Lorenzo Insigne cross to get the hosts within one. The comeback seemed to surely be in the cards when in the 84th minute, Napoli were awarded a penalty when the ball struck Alex Sandro in the arm. It was a rather harsh call as Sandro was only a couple of feet away and wasn’t even facing the ball, but as we have seen so often in Serie A this season, the penalty was awarded. Insigne stepped up to take the penalty but the Napoli captain was unable to complete the comeback as his strike came rattling off the post and the match ended 1-2.

Napoli dominated every statistical category of the match with 63% possession, 12 corners, and 11 shots, despite being down a man for most of the match. But the better team doesn’t always win in football. It will take a while to get over this one, but let’s hope the team can rally around this performance and make a deep run in the Europa League.
